Amélie-les-Bains - Palalda

The Mediterranean vegetation such as mimosa, oleander, palm trees and sisal plants, illustrates the softness of the climate enjoyed by Amelie.

Amelie is a spa and mineral water centre twinned with the old village of Palalda, which is above Amelie, and was built because of the location of the gorges of Mondony and features patinated roofs

Amelie, formerly called Baths of Arles (Bains d’ Arles) owes its name to Amelie, the Queen of King Louis-Philippe, and it was because of her liaison with the General of Castellan that the military hospital was built in 1854.

The thermal baths of Mondony and the Roman baths were built at the exit to the ‘gorges of Mondony’. The Roman baths contain a restored Roman swimming pool. The water in both these baths are beneficial for respiratory and rheumatic disorders.
Amelie (230m) is located in the heart of the Vallespir on the southern slopes of Canigou and 30km from the Mediterranean and was popular with the French nobility. The blood and gold colours of the Catalonian flag are prominent and show the strong links and folk traditions throughout the Vallespir.
Amelie is a town of approximately 3644 inhabitants and has all the infrastructure present in much larger cities.

There is a daily market and a larger weekly market, and in July there is an international folk festival. Walking, hiking, horse riding, cycling and running are all popular in and around this pleasant and old French town
